The Mom Egg 2015 Vol. 13 Submission Guidelines—

General Issue Plus Special Poetry Folio “Compassionate Action”

The Mom Egg wants submissions of your best works of poetry, fiction, non-fiction and art for its thirteenth annual issue.

We publish work by mothers about everything, and by everyone about mothers or motherhood.  If you are a mother, you may submit work on any topic; if you are not a mother, the piece must have some aspect of mothering or motherhood as a central element (not just a minor mother character).

This is a general (non-themed) issue, however it will contain a special themed folio for poetry, “Compassionate Action,” curated by contributing editor Jennifer Jean.

Both experimental and traditional works are welcome.  Please see below for specifics for submitting in each genre.

Submissions period is June 1, 2014 to September 1, 2014.  We will respond by January 15, 2015.

Compassionate Action Themed Section

We are interested in poems that explore, from different perspectives, the theme of Compassionate Action.

Mothers, and motherly nurturers, don't only feel for others in pain and strife—they take action. This compassionate action, whether large or small, often occurs at home or in small communities. It can also occur on national or global levels. Sometimes it doesn’t occur at all.

Poems might consider:

What compassionate actions have you witnessed? How have you surprised yourself? What must be overcome to find paths of action, and to bypass inertia? How can we encourage people to take compassionate action in their own lives?

Please submit up to 4 poems in a single document (.doc, .docx, .txt).  Poems do not have to be on separate pages.  Please single space (unless spacing is part of the poem). Please put your name and email address on each page.

Fiction or Creative Prose

Please submit one piece of 850 words or fewer, or several short-short pieces that total fewer than 850 words in all, in a single word or text document.  Please double space, and put your name and email address on each page.

Please submit up to four works of art (drawings, paintings, photos, etc.) that relate to mother or motherhood, or to the theme of Compassionate Action, in a .jpg file at 300 dpi.  (The Mom Egg cover is color; interior art is black and white.  If your art is selected, we will request a larger file.
